Things to See and Do in Rotorua
Rotorua is known as one of the top tourist destinations for New Zealand and as such is full of exciting views and things to do. Below are a few of Garth and India’s favourite sights and activities. They range in price, excitement level, and appropriate age level - consider yourself warned!
-
Whakarewarewa Redwoods forest is where Garth and India will tie the knot on Saturday. It’s 55 hectares of beautiful forest, home to over 170 species of trees, though its most famous for its Californian Redwoods.
There are several paths to walk or mountain bike through, including a walking path up in the treetops which is lit at night for a stunning experience.

If you’re looking for a thrill, Skyline is the perfect day out in Rotorua. Start by taking the gondola up the side of Mount Ngongotahā, and then head to the SkySwing, Zipline or straight to the luge.
There is a Cafe and Winery, stunning views, and a jelly belly store on the way back out to the gondola.
It’s definitely one of the pricier activities in Rotorua and one of the busiest so my recommendation would be to get in early if you want to go.

Mini Golf is everywhere in New Zealand. What’s different about this place?
There are Flemish Giants everywhere.
Big bunnies hide in amongst the trees and tiny huts throughout this course and truly make the experience of waiting your turn worth it.

As many of you know, Garth loves to be submerged in a body of water more than he enjoys snickers (which is a lot). Below are four locations for just that, that range in price but are all stunning:
Waikite Valley Hotpools
A short drive south along State Highway One brings you to the beautiful Waikite Valley. These hot pools are an amazing option for non-tourist trap pricing, a hot soak surrounded by beautiful NZ bush and an equally beautiful walk to the nearby waterfall.
Secret Spot Hot Tubs Rotorua
Exactly as it sounds, this experience right outside of town is a luxurious way to relax.
Soak in a cedar hot tubs surrounded by forest and ferns, with drinks delivered direct to your hot tub and (if you’re brave) try out their cold cedar plunge tubs.
Price: $43 per adult
The Polynesian Spa
The Polynesian Spa has many different pools, including private pools and a plunge pool. It’s a lovely way to enjoy the view of the lake.
Price: $44.95+ per adult
Wai Ariki
Wai Ariki only opened in 2023 but it has already become world-famous for the luxury inside. Boasting waterfall showers, saunas, a mud lounge and a full spa and wellness centre, the hefty price tag makes this experience possibly the most expensive treat on our list, but boy is it worth it.
Price: $110+ per adult

Okay this one isn’t in Rotorua, but if you’re travelling up from Wellington you’ll want to make this stop. About an hour before Taupo, on an otherwise unassuming stretch of road is the entrance to a walk around Lake Rotopounamu.
A 10 minute bush walk leads to the most beautiful lake view, with small sandy beaches and all the peace in the world.
We love this location so much we made it the picture on our R.S.V.P form so take a look if you want to see what we mean!
The lake is a gorgeous place to cool off in the summer, even with geothermal activity warming the sand under your feet.

Wai-O-Tapu is definitely one of the most popular geothermal parks in Rotorua.
The famous Champagne Pool and Lady Knox Geyser are located here as are some views you really can’t find anywhere else in the world.
There is usually quite the crowd and not a lot of shade so slip, slop, slap, wrap, and bring headphones for those overstimulated little nuggets.
Price: $45 per adult

If you’re looking for free things to do in Rotorua, check out the free geothermal park, Kuirau Park.
This awesome park, located in the center of Rotorua, is great for those who want to discover Rotorua’s geothermal features without spending a lot of money or time in the car.
You can take a short nature walk around the park to see hot spring gysers and stick your feet in the hot mineral water pool at the end (or even have a soak in the mud baths).
It’s a fantastic place for a relaxing (if a bit stinky) afternoon!

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is a little on the pricey side ($65 for adults), but we’ve included it as it is home to the now buried eighth wonder of the world; the Pink and White Terraces.
There are many self-guided walks, from 45 minutes to 4 hours, so you can choose your own adventure - and there is even a boat cruise option for those looking to splurge. The shortest walk still gives you some stunning views such as the Frying Pan Lake and the Inferno Crater. It’s often quieter than Wai-O-Tapu and proceeds go back to the local iwi in order to maintain the area.

Government Gardens is a stunning park with gorgeous florals. It’s also home to the sizeable tudor-style Rotorua Museum and Blue Baths bathhouse. While the blue baths are still sadly closed, this area is still a great place to go for a picnic or a wander in the sunshine.
